Germinating Parsnips (Gladiator)

When it comes to vegetables my nemesis have always been parsnips. I have sown them in different types of soil, varying dates – all with no or very little success.

One key to success is to use fresh seeds. Parsnips do not keep for more than a year or so, so don’t waste your time. This year I am germinating my seeds first, on a damp sheet of kitchen towel, in an ice cream container, and covered with a second damp sheet. Put the lid on, keep them warm – I had mine on a shelf in the kitchen. You can see from the photos how they germinated. Fingers crossed they will grow on until ready to plant out on the plot.
