Last month, CHAS (chairman Henry Gewanter, schools co-ordinator John Gill along with Katja our PR officer) awarded the Centenary Plate to Cavendish Primary School and the runners-up Cup to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. CHAS felt that the pupils, parents and staff of these two schools had made the most significant improvement in horticultural matters. Chiswick Buzz TV filmed the events and you can see their report here.
As a society we partner with schools in Chiswick to encourage the growing of produce and flowers. We supply seeds and compost free of charge and give advice to all concerned.
The majority of our committee have Freedom Bus Passes and physically find it difficult to give as much assistance to schools as we would like to. Cavendish and William Hogarth Schools are particularly keen to build more raised beds within the schools outdoor environment and we would like to appeal to any of our members who could help with this project – supplying the material and/or helping with construction.
I know most of you have an allotment and that alone is hard enough to maintain and keep you busy, but we are looking to the next generation of allotment holders who have a genuine interest in learning how food grows and how good it tastes. So please contact John Gill or Katja on schools@growchiswick.org and do a little bit to help the future guardians of our allotments culture.
