We’ve recently joined Garden Organic and their Heritage Seed Library – and our first batch of heritage seeds have arrived!
They include a wide range of unusual varieties of vegetables:
- Achocha
- Cabbage – ‘Southampton Wonder’
- Carrot – ‘Red Elephant’
- Cucumber – ‘Perfection’
- Kale – ‘Theyer’
- Lettuce – ‘Carnival’
- Squash – ‘Greek’
- Tomato – ‘Konig Humbert’ & ‘Kathmandu’
They also included a packet of ‘Golden Frills’ Mustard, which will produce delicate, serrated leaves which are mild enough to be eaten raw in salads. This is one of the ‘green manure crop’ seeds which Garden Organic sell to grow when the soil would otherwise be left bare. The foliage suppresses weeds and provides cover for beetles and other pest-eating creatures. The roots improve soil structure and absorb surplus nutrients so they are not washed away by rain – dig the plants into the soil to decay and release their nutrients to feed whatever you plant next.
The Greenhouse Team will start germinating the seeds now and they should – hopefully – be available to buy in the Trading Hut fairly soon!
