Our show secretary reports as follows:-
“Despite that national event and a few other local ones we had a reasonable attendance of entrants and visitors. The greatest difference, numerically and decoratively, was the additional 114 entrants with 132 exhibits from local school displays. Their displays really did fill the viewers with wonder, and in the Trading Hut, you would have a chance to see Cavendish school’s host of golden nasturtiums. Another sensory delight was the fragrance to be enjoyed whilst passing the sweet pea classes.
It was good to see there were a few more newcomers with Roger Cook the most notably successful, winning recognition with all of his three tentative submissions – “testing the water “he told me the day before – at that rate I think the usual suspects amongst the trophy winners will need to be on their guard. It really is encouraging that he and Lawrence Pollard, amongst others, demonstrated that it’s not so daunting to enter and that the regulars can be beaten. Similarly, in the children’s classes first tries by Eva Tamang, with a model garden, and Freya, with a spontaneous sunflower picture, were rewarded with a winner’s card, as of course were several of the new school entrants. Painting pebbles as well as pictures proved popular. It’s to be hoped that parents will encourage their children during the forthcoming holiday to create something for the Autumn Show.
As usual, Panni submitted something remarkable, this time it waspak choi, whilst amongst the flowers, it was probably the spikes or blooms that were the most stunning.
What was lacking in quantity amongst the domestic entries was redeemed with quality: eg the judge notes ” near perfect” for Loraraine Taylor’s fruit curd. Surely, however, there could have been many more entries for the mixed salad.
Thanks to all those who contributed – it goes without saying that Jenny’s team’s tea and cakes went like “hot” ones, as did Alastair’s offerings from the BBQ.
The Show concluded with amusing anecdotes from both Polly Devlin , the presenter, and President Paul Lynch, the introducer who later auctioned the produce at literally breathtaking speed. In their speeches, both had stressed the need for more wildflowers, and then mingled amongst our supporters both young and old.”
