Getting rid of rubbish and green waste

There was a lot of discussion at the Hounslow Allotments Forum on Thursday about fly tipping.  This seems to be a lot worse on many of other sites in the borough as they have more boundaries with public roads.  That’s not to say it’s not unknown on the Chiswick sites (please report it on the Lovecleanstreets app – find it in you app store).

The issue of rubbish on sites dumped on uncultivated allotments and common areas also came up and has done with many people I have spoken to lately – one allotment got together and paid for rubbish removal.  It’s a solution others may wish to consider, lots of things to bare in mind, not least collecting the money and how much rubbish everyone has.

Green (or brown more likely) waste is another issue – it’s one that in the past would probably have been solved by having a bonfire but  bonfires are prohibited on allotments.  The solution for gardeners at home is to sign up to the green waste collection service for there council and it seems to me that we could do with something like this for the allotments.  My allotment lies partly under very large poplars which can and do shed large limbs – what am i supposed to do with them?

I would propose a Saturday morning green waste collection, organised by allotmenteers and paid for by those who wish to make use, a skip arrives 10am and is collected 3pm, could this work?  would plot holders be interested?

Thanks Christina, that’s an interesting and potentially useful idea!
As the Council are promising to use the extra funds from increasing our rents for providing better infrastructure and services, perhaps they could arrange the collection by the same vehicles that collect from households – something I’ll try to raise when I next speak with them.

    Kind regards,
    Henry
