We started our Annual General Meeting (this time celebrating our 100th Anniversary) with an Extraordinary General Meeting in which we voted to accept proxies and lowered the number of people required for a quorum, as in a previous year we nearly needed to enrol someone’s dog to get us over the minimum number required to hold the meeting.
We needn’t have worried this year, as the meeting was well attended, but discussions were held about how to encourage even more members to attend in future. I hope the offer of fabulous free cakes served after the meeting (including my wife’s delicious chocolate one!) will continue to draw the crowds this meeting deserves.
There were, as ever, a number of matters raised by those attending – and lively and energetic discussions ensued. Some felt the discussions were perhaps too lively and energetic – rising at times to ‘heated’ – but I believe these meetings are the perfect time for anyone to raise anything they like, be it airing grievances or making suggestions for improvements in the future.
I like to look on the bright side, so believe that any heated discussions are a reflection of the dedication and emotional attachment we all feel for the Society and our local community.
Long may the discussions – heated or otherwise – continue!
