And straight in at number 1 …

Idly musing the other day, it occurred to me that there are very few songs for gardeners – probably because gardening hasn’t yet been seen as “the new rock and roll” (with the honourable exception of Kim Wilde, of course). Songs with seemingly relevant titles turn out to be misleading.  Strawberry Fields is about a Salvation Army children’s home in Liverpool, whose annual garden parties were a favourite treat of the young John Lennon.  And (I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden is really about taking the rough with the smooth in a relationship – so I suppose could also apply to growing things! So I decided I had to be creative and risk a few puns.

Here are my top 10 songs for fruit & veg growers:

10   A Whole Shallotta Love – Led Zeppelin

9    A Chard Day’s Night – The Beatles

8    Aubergine Genie – David Bowie

7    Rhubarbara Ann – The Beach Boys

6    Ace of Spuds – Motorhead

5    Midnight Brambler – Rolling Stones

4    A Whiter Shade of Kale – Procol Harum

3    Little Red Courgette – Prince

2    Tracks of My Shears – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (thanks to Dirk for that one)

1    Can’t Get You Out of My Shed – Kylie Minogue

What songs would you add? I seem to have forgotten flowers completely and most of the entries are from the last century. Please send in your suggestions – perhaps we can come up with a soundtrack for the summer party?

I would definitely add Guy Clark – Homegrown tomatoes :)), it is fun and caring and it is all about the hoooomegrown tomatoes.
